Vehicle

Produces a real vehicle configuration certified for sale in the United States, with a VIN built for it, the state it is registered in and a license plate in that state's format.

Use it for any record that describes a vehicle: an inventory, a fleet, an insurance policy, a service history or a parking permit. Every sub-field of a row describes the same vehicle, so the make, model, model year, engine, fuel economy, VIN and plate in one row always match.

Sub-fields: at least one must be mapped. See Sub-fields.

Every JSON block on this page is a single field object, one entry in a table's fields array. See Building a Request for the full request structure.

Sub-fields

Sub-field Produces

vin A 17-character vehicle identification number built for this vehicle, e.g. 1HGGK5H7XGY664391. See VIN.
wmi The three-character manufacturer identifier the VIN starts with, e.g. 1HG.

transmission is the transmission as it is recorded for the vehicle, so its wording varies. transmissionType and transmissionSpeeds give the same information as consistent values.

cityMpg, highwayMpg and combinedMpg are whole numbers. engineDisplacement is a decimal with one decimal place, so map it to a Decimal, Double or text column.

Weighting

makes, models, registrationCountries and registrationStates are weighted lists. Each entry's weight is relative to the other entries in the same list. It is not a percentage and the weights need not add up to any total, so weights of 3 and 1 give the first entry three rows for every one the second gets. An entry with no weight counts as 1, so a list with no weights set shares the rows evenly.

List How rows are shared
makes Among the makes, by weight. Within a make, spreadBy sets how its vehicles share the rows.
models Among the models, by weight. Within a model, spreadBy sets how its vehicles share the rows.
registrationCountries Among the countries, by weight. Only US registers vehicles, so the list has no effect on which states are selected.
registrationStates Among the states, by weight. Without the list, every state is selected in proportion to the vehicles it registers.

makes and models cannot be combined. To weight models of different makes, name the make in each models entry.

VIN

vin is a 17-character vehicle identification number built for the vehicle in the same row:

Positions Content
1 to 3 The manufacturer identifier, the same value wmi writes.
4 to 8 The vehicle descriptor the manufacturer uses for this vehicle.
9 The check digit, computed over the other sixteen characters.
10 The model year code.
11 The plant code.
12 to 17 A random serial number.

The descriptor matches the vehicle as closely as the manufacturer's VIN patterns allow: to the model and engine where possible, otherwise to the model, otherwise to the make. A VIN decoder therefore reads back the make and model year of every VIN, and the model of most. The letters I, O and Q never appear, and the check digit is always valid.

The serial number is random, so a VIN is well formed and decodes, but it is not taken from any vehicle.

The tenth character is the model year code: 2 for 2002, Y for 2000, L for 2020, K for 2019, S for 2025 and 1 for 2001.

Registration and plates

Each row is registered in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. Without registrationStates, states are selected in proportion to the number of vehicles each one registers, so California and Texas appear far more often than Wyoming or Vermont. With it, rows are shared among the listed states by their weights. See Weighting.

licensePlate follows the registration state's standard passenger format, with the spaces and dashes the plate shows. Letters a state does not issue, such as I, O and Q in most states, are left out. Specialty and vanity plates are not produced.

Formats follow the model year

Where a state has changed its format, the plate uses the format the state was issuing in the vehicle's model year, so an older vehicle has an older plate. Colorado shows all three of its recent formats:

County-coded states

Alabama, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming put a county code at the start of the plate. The county is selected in proportion to its population, so the codes of the most populous counties appear most often.

5 is Baldwin County in Alabama. 1A is Ada County, 2C is Canyon County and K is Kootenai County in Idaho. 15 is Lake County and 7 is Flathead County in Montana. An Idaho plate ends in V in Ada County, P in Canyon County and U in every other county.

A generated plate follows a real format, so it can match the plate of a real vehicle. Treat a plate column as you would any other value that can identify a vehicle.

Body and size

vehicleClass is the size class the vehicle is rated in, such as Compact Cars, Small Sport Utility Vehicle or Standard Pickup Trucks. bodyCategory groups those classes into the broad categories in VehicleBodyCategory. bodyClass is the body style recorded for the vehicle's VIN. It is recorded separately from the size class, so the two can describe the same vehicle differently, and it is null where none is recorded:

Filter by bodyCategories or vehicleClasses. bodyClass is for output only.

Spreading rows across vehicles

Some models were sold in many more configurations than others. With spreadBy set to Model, the default, every make, model and model year has the same chance of being selected, so a model year sold in 40 configurations appears no more often than one sold in two. With Variant, every configuration has the same chance, so models sold in many configurations appear more often.

Unique vehicles

With unique set, no two rows have the same mapped values. How many rows that allows depends on what is mapped:

Mapped Distinct rows available
vin or licensePlate No fixed limit, because each row has its own random serial number or plate.
A registration state or state name, without vin or licensePlate The number of different combinations of the other mapped values among the matching vehicles, multiplied by the number of states.
Anything else The number of different combinations of the mapped values among the matching vehicles. With only make mapped, it is the number of makes.

With makes or models, the matching vehicles are those of every entry together, and a vehicle that matches more than one entry counts once.

A table with more rows than the field can make distinct is rejected before any data is generated:

{
  "type": "urn:alchemy:error:invalid-generation-request",
  "title": "Invalid generation request.",
  "status": 400,
  "detail": "This field (table 'vehicles', column 'make') is unique for 40 rows, but its settings allow only 36 distinct value(s). Lower rowCount, widen the field's range, or turn off unique."
}

Finding filter values

makes, models and vehicleClasses take names exactly as the vehicle data spells them, apart from case. These endpoints list the values each filter accepts, with the model years each one covers:

Endpoint Lists
GET /v1/vehicles/makes Every make, for makes.
GET /v1/vehicles/models Every model, or the models of one make, for models.
GET /v1/vehicles/options The values of bodyCategories, drives, powertrains, registrationRegions, transmissionTypes and vehicleClasses.
GET /v1/vehicles/manufacturers Every make with the manufacturer identifiers its VINs start with.
